My Bloody Valentine Cake

Needing to turn out a cake for a visit to my parent’s house, I turned towards another boxed cake mix. This time around, at the word of a family friend, I used a Pillsbury cake box mix and let me tell you – it is so much better for cake baking and decorating than Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. It was perfect. The crusts were slightly harder, which made decorating easier and the inside was wonderfully and perfectly moist. It was easy to decorate and delicious to eat. I will be using Pillsbury cake mixes from now on for all box mixes that I need to use.

Nicht So Gute

Tonight my husband and I had one of the most harrowing sessions our kitchen has seen since we moved in two years ago. We decided that we would bake together a Swartzwelder Kirsch Torte, which is German for Blackforest Cherry Cake and is what I remember as one of the most incredibly decadent cakes I have ever had.

Sugar Cookies + Buttercream Icing

My sugar cookie decorating didn’t go quite as planned. When attempting to draw lines around the outer rim of the cookies and spread white buttercream icing cleanly within the line it didn’t work well. The lines went fairly well, but then when I would take my frosting spatula and go next to them, it would often pull them off completely.

New Years Resolution: Bake More

Tonight, my husband and I chose to stay at home with our sweet dog and watch movies, cook, bake and just relax instead of heading out and partying to bring in the New Year. As we are planning to watch Ohio State beat Oregon tomorrow in the Rose Bowl, I decided that baking and decorating some OSU/football-themed sugar cookies would be a good fun project for the night.

Since I wanted to play around with the many decorating tools I received as Christmas gifts, I opted to go the quick and easy baking route with a Duncan Hines Lemon Cake mixture. I made doubly sure I had measured the ingredients absolutely perfectly and even set the timer on our oven to make sure I mixed for approximately thirty seconds and then for two minutes on ‘medium’ in our black Kitchen-Aid mixer.
